Artist To Aritst: Aziatix

Here’s the first “Artist To Artist” interview with Aziatix!

- To kick things off, introduce yourselves.

We are Aziatix - Eddie Shin, Flowsik, and Nicky Lee.

- Before Aziatix, you all had your individual solo careers. How did Aziatix come together and why did you decide to form a group?

We all met through big brother Jae out in Seoul: Flowsik hooked up with Jae through Facebook/Youtube and when Flow went out to Korea, him and Jae started working on tracks together. I [Nicky] was out in Seoul working on my Mandarin album and Jae asked me to do a feature on one of the songs that him and Flow were working on; it was fire! Then Flow and Eddie met through playing basketball and they found out they both shared a love for music. From there, they started working on tracks and that’s how I [Nicky] met Eddie. All three of us eventually got down on a track together and it turned out fresh! One song became two, two became three, and now here we are with two albums!

- What made you guys decide to make music in English rather than in Korean?

We all grew up in the States: I [Flowsik] was born and raised in Queens, NY, I [Eddie] was born in Boston, I [Nicky] grew up in LA. So English is a language that we’re all comfortable with. Who knows, though… there’s always a chance the next record might be in Korean, Japanese, or Mandarin, hehe.

- Talk a little a bit about what it’s like to work with Jae Chong.

Jae Chong is a genius! He’s a mentor and a big brother to all of us and we’ve been a fan ever since his Solid days, so working with him is a great honor. We’re all very thankful that he gives us creative freedom and let’s us make the music we want to make.

- What’s the general vibe like in the studio when working on tracks? Does one person tend to lead the creative process or is everyone hands-on with the projects?

Someone might have an idea and we’ll just run with it, Jae might have a beat and we’ll start building on that, and/or we could be just hangin’ out and one of us might have a melody in our head and we’ll work off that; it’s all very natural. We also write fast. We feel like if a song doesn’t come out in a few hours, it’s most likely not going to be a hit song. Our first single “Go” was pretty much done in one day - from the arrangement to writing the lyrics to recording!

- How would you describe your group dynamics?

We all grew up with different musical influences/styles. Nicky is more on the R&B/Soul sound, I [Eddie] got the R&B/Pop feel, and Flow’s Hip-Hop all day. But when we put it all together on a track, it becomes something very cool and unique, which we feel is the “Aziatix” sound.

- There’s a lot of different ways artists tend to approach songwriting. How do ideas for your songs come about? What tends to inspire you?

We don’t sit down and say, “let’s write a song.” We can be chillin’, grabbin’ some food and we might see something or talk about something that will inspire us. It can also be things that we experience, relationships, etc. We just let the inspiration for the songs come to us.

- What drives you to continue to make music?

It’s all about the music to us. We want to make music that touches the soul and touches people’s lives. We also strive to be good role models for the next generation.

 - Any words of advice for the aspiring musicians out there?

As cliche as it sounds, no matter what anybody tells you, no matter how big the obstacle is, no matter how impossible it might seem, never give up on your dreams!

 - Any last words/shoutouts?

To all the fans/Aziaddicts out there: Please continue to support our music! We thank and love each and every one of you guys! Love and blessings!

Much love and thanks to Aziatix for taking time out of their busy schedule for this interview! Make sure to check out their projects:
